Sports injuries result from
acute trauma or repetitive stress associated with athletic activities. Sports injuries can affect bones or soft tissue (ligaments,
muscles, tendons).
Types of sports injuries:
· Minor soft tissue trauma
Ø Bruise (contusion) caused when blood collects at the site of the injury and discolors the skin
· Sprains: a partial or complete tear of a ligament
· Strain: a partial or complete tear of muscle
· Injury to tendon:
Ø Tendonitis: inflammation of a tendon
Ø Bursitis: inflammation of a fluid-filled sac that allows tendons to move easily over bones
Injury usually results
from minor stresses that repeatedly aggravate the same part of the body. These
conditions often occur at the same time.
· Fractures: arm and leg bones are most susceptible to breaks; legs and feet are most susceptible to stress fractures
· Shin splints: characterized by soreness and slight swelling of the front, inside, and back of the lower leg, and by
sharp pain that develops and intensifies while exercising
Hyperbaric oxygenation
therapy (HBOT) for sports injuries:
· Reduces pain and swelling
· Prevents hypoxia of traumatized tissues
· Speeds healing of tissues, ligaments and bones
· Reduces scar tissue formation and damage
· Helps players return to activity sooner
Suggested treatment schedule:
Number of treatments is dependent upon level of injury and response to therapy. Treatments may be given
daily; five days/week. Doctor’s prescription needed. Fractured bones typically heal 1/3 faster than without therapy. Individual
responses vary.
